Company Overview

Cryoelectra GmbH develops high-power RF systems for demanding applications in science and industry.

With over 30 years of experience in accelerator technology and RF engineering, our solutions are trusted worldwide – from RF amplifiers to complete system integration. We stand for precision engineering, high reliability, and uncompromising quality.

All development and production processes are carried out in-house. Designed and manufactured in Germany, our systems ensure full control and consistently high standards.

Heritage & Expertise

Founded in 1992 by Prof. Helmut Piel and rooted in research at the Universities of Bonn and Wuppertal, Cryoelectra builds on decades of scientific excellence.

Applications

Our systems are used worldwide in particle accelerators, medical RF systems, and nuclear fusion – enabling precise control, reliable performance, and advanced scientific and industrial processes.

Capabilities

We design and manufacture low-level RF control systems and high-power solid-state RF amplifiers for pulsed and continuous wave (CW) operation, enabling both short high-power bursts and stable long-duration RF output. Our technology covers frequencies from 20 MHz to 3 GHz and output powers exceeding 150 kW.

Specialized SSA manufacturing and a modern production and test environment covering 800 m² ensure consistent quality. In total, more than 2,500 m² are dedicated to development and production activities.

Development Timeline

1973–1992: Scientific Origin

  • Institute for Accelerator Physics established at University of Wuppertal
  • Development of superconducting RF cavities and accelerator structures
  • Foundation of Cryoelectra in 1992

1992–2010: RF Systems and Technology Transition

  • Development of superconducting RF components for telecom and accelerator applications
  • Early system integration (RF, cryogenics, control)
  • Transition to transistor-based RF amplifier technology

 

2010–2015: High-Power Solid-State RF (SSA)

  • Introduction of solid-state RF amplifiers >100 kW (≈72 MHz class)
  • Typical systems: up to 150 kW CW output
  • Deployment in proton therapy accelerators (global installations)

 

2013–2021: Synchrotron RF Systems (500 MHz)

  • Multi-generation SSA development for synchrotron light sources
  • Output power up to ~160 kW CW
  • Installations at research facilities in Europe, North America and Asia

 

2018–Present: High-Frequency SSA (1.3–1.75 GHz)

  • Compact high-efficiency systems (e.g. 1.3 GHz, ~130 kW CW)
  • GaN-based transistor technology
  • Applications in LINACs and synchrotron facilities

 

2020–Present: Fusion and High-Power Systems

  • Long-pulse RF amplifiers (~120 MHz, up to ~180 kW)
  • Broadband systems in the 60–90 MHz range
  • System concepts extending into MW-class power levels
